After graduation Alan worked as a mining Geologist in Zambia before following a career in the academic world. In 1988 he returned to the returned to the Lake District to further an ambition to paint full time. He is largely self-taught and enjoys painting landscape in the vibrant combination of pastel and water based paints and inks. His are works of simple realism modified to reflect the mood of the moment. He returns time and again to familiar locations to capture the essence of the place in the ever - changing Lakeland light. His work has been exhibited at Carlisle Open Exhibition at Tullie House, The Cumbrian Open Exhibition at Upfront Gallery, The Lake Artists Summer Exhibition at Grasmere.
