Phil Cram, who left school in 1964 having shown aptitude for art, now regards drawing and painting as not just a recreational interest but as the cornerstone of his imagination. He took up painting at the age of 36 when he bought a cheap set of watercolours and started to 'dabble' as a means of easing the boredom of a rainy day during a seaside caravan holiday. Watercolour still holds a fascination, particularly the way 'accidents' can often achieve better results than the plan. He made a 1999 appearance on Channel 4's "Watercolour Challenge" but is still exploring the possibilities of different media-both pure and mixed. "I think every painter is influenced by somebody else's work - Matisse and the Fauves have an emotional hold on me - but I would like to think I'll never stop exploring subject matter or the way that subjects as different as mountains and figures can be described in colour." |
